                           NOTABLE WEATHER EVENTS

June 2 1903
The first major flood since 1844 devestated Armourdale
and Argentine KS.
June 7 1982 Pre-dawn thunderstorms roared through the Kansas City
area and produced wind gusts to 78 mph at KCI, the highest gust at that
location in more than 2o years. The winds knocked out power to 135,000
residents north of the Missouri River and cost KCPL $2.5 million to fix.
June 8 1966 A major tornado, rated F5-3-4 on the Fujita-Pearson scale
hit Topeka shortly after 7 PM. Most of the damage was done in the eight
mile long by four blocks wide path through the center of the city.
June 9 1984 Up to eight inches of rain turned Johnson County's Indian
Creek into a raging torrent. Flood damage in Greater Kansas City was more
than 10 million dollars.
June 11 1953 The temperature at the Municipal Airport soared from
a tepid morning low of 82 degrees to an afternoon high of 104. Both
readings are still the warmest of record for so early in the season.
June 14 1984 Belton MO received 4.5 inches of rain in just fifteen
minutes, and one person drowned in the flash flood that ensued.
June 15 1981 A severe thunderstorm hit Rushin Heights during the early
morning rush hour and blew one car through a bank window.
June 19 1981 A tornado rated F3-3-2 on the Fujita-Pearson scale
hit nearby Lawrence KS at 6:30 PM killing one person and injuring 33.
June 21 1991 A wind gust to 95 mph was reported at the Downtown
Airport. The fierce wind destroyed nine planes and forced the FAA to
abandon the tower.
June 22 1947 Holt Missouri, to the NNE of Kansas City, had an
incredible 12 inches of rain in 42 minutes! This is still the
world's record.
June 23 1934 The temperature at Municipal Airport hit 108 degrees
setting the June record, which holds to this day. The record was
equalled in 1980.
